Building Habits 3x3

3 books, 3 podcasts, 3 practices to help you build solid habits in 2024

At the start of the year, you hear a lot of hype around building new habits, creating new routines, all the New Years resolution type things that “aren’t” New Years resolutions, because in 2024 - we don’t set resolutions, we set intentions.

Whichever way you word it, it comes back to one thing.

Creating change.

A part of creating change, is building new habits. Doing the thing differently to way you’ve done it before, requires intentional, focused, habit building. So we’re sharing 3 books, 3 podcasts, and 3 practices you can use to build new habits around change.

📖 3 books

  • Atomic Habits - This is a repeater in our whare. A repeater is a book you read it again and again. It’s easy to digest, simple to follow and systems focused - it’s practical.

  • Deep Work - A science-y perspective on why it’s so important that we learn to focus, and do deep work again. In an age of distraction, deep work helps us to be more productive and things done.

  • Māori Made Easy - Not specifically about habit formation, but the system the book is based on, is! Experience habit formation in motion whilst learning te reo Māori, with 30 mins a day of mahi.

🎙️3 podcasts

  • Te Kāinga Wāhine Podcast - If you want to get straight to it, check out this, this and this episode. Obviously we’re a little biased, but we know our podcast has some great nuggets of wisdom in there for building habits that last.

  • Cooking the Books Podcast - Frances Cook hosts this podcast, and drops some solid gems when it comes to building positive money habits. Also worth a mention if you’re focusing on money habits, check out Māori Millionaire - Te Kahukura who shares her personal journey and habits with money.

  • She Moves Podcast - This is a really great fitness for women/mums podcast. Jen and Ren are super knowledgeable when it comes to fitness, but moreso - they know a thing or two about setting goals, changing habits and getting it (exercise!) done.

🧘🏽‍♀️3 practices

  • Replicate what works. What habits do you have, that are doing you good, that you can replicate? What makes it easy and effortless? What do you have in place to make that habit succeed? How can you replicate the same practice? There’s no need to reinvent the wheel - replicate what works.

  • Eat the frogs. What are the hard things, the annoying things, or the boring things? We call them frogs. How do you make frogs a part of your routine? By eating them first. We talk about eating the frogs first each and every day, not because we want to, but because they’re necessary to do the good things.

  • Link up for accountability. If there’s one thing that helps drive success, it’s someone else knowing you’re working on the thing. Tell someone else - link up for accountability. It could be a coach, a mentor, a whānau member, or a friend.
