TKW Newsletter : Backing Wāhine Māori in Business

Kia ora anō e hoa 👋

It’s Amy here.

You might have noticed we went off the radar the past two weeks and didn’t land a newsletter in your inbox - sorry about that! My little whānau and I snuck off for a much needed holiday in Fiji to round off what has been a massive year.

When I say snuck off, it kind of felt like crawling across the finish line. Completely, well and truly spent in all aspects of energy. I had just come out of delivering two kaupapa back-to-back the week before, and the tank was below the empty line.

It’s something I want to work on being better at - refilling the tank before getting to that point of exhaustion. A friend from UK told me in Aotearoa we do holidays backwards. We save up our time till the end of the year and take these big long breaks, which don’t serve for another whole year - we tend to run out of steam around September onwards.

Her suggestion was take smaller breaks more often. Once a quarter if you can - take a week off to top up, so that you’re never fully emptying out. I’m keen to give it a go next year!

Remember a holiday doesn’t have to be a big expensive trip overseas, a staycation is pretty darn awesome too, and even better - no packing needed! Disconnect from mahi, and spend time in the garden, go for walks, sleep till mid morning, reconnect with te taiao.

Do you have any tips for managing your energy? Drop me a reply and let me know what works for you, and we’ll share with the community.

In this newsletter we’ve got:

🎉 Celebration: Wrapping up our Inaugural Wāhine Māori Business Programme

Did you know, nearly 40% of Māori-owned businesses are led by wāhine Māori? It’s this statistic that makes it so incredibly important for us to invest in the development wāhine Māori, and the fact that they innately have a flow-on impact to those around them. When wāhine Māori succeed, their whānau, their communities, and those around them are uplifted.

We are incredibly proud of our inaugural cohort who have now completed their six month business development programme. Read more here.

📰 Spotlight: Kāhu ki Rotorua: Growing Te Reo from Within

A few days ago, Ahenata-May Daniels (one of the participants in our latest cohort) got the opportunity to share the incredible mahi she is doing through Te Hūnuku with Rotorua Daily Post.

“Te Hūnuku serves as a language therapy space for te reo Māori, providing learners with a haven to unpack, reflect, and release language trauma.”
