TKW Newsletter : Trailblazing, standing tall, leading out
Kia ora e hoa 👋
130 years ago, on this day in 1893, the Electoral Act was signed into law in Aotearoa, and we became the first self-governing country to allow women the legal right to vote in parliamentary elections.
Aotearoa has always been trailblazers, and women in particular have made memorable stands along the way.
Think Dame Whina Cooper. Princess Te Puea Hērangi. Eva Rickard. Iriaka Rātana.
A few years back, our founder Amy was fortunate to be part of an event celebrating Suffrage 125 at Government House. Take a look at this illustrated history that was completed at the time, by NZ artists Kate Hursthouse and Karen Brook.
Fast forward five more years and the journey of progress persists. At the time, we marked the day with #WhakatūWāhine - a call to action that still resonates today. Continue to be heard wāhine mā. Stand tall. Lead out.
Kōkiri e hoa mā!

🎫 Be a part of our big event!
Something we always knew, but has been playing out tenfold since kicking off our six month business development programme, is the true value of connection, community and asking for help.
When you find your community, the power of that community is equal to so much more than any one individual. We were never meant to do this mahi alone. We’re stronger together.
Our team has been busy at mahi planning an event next year for Māori and Pasifika women in business, and we are looking for sponsors, connectors, and cheerleaders to help us get there.
So we have an ask - do you work with or for an organisation that is keen to support Māori and Pasifika women in business? If they align with our mission for uplifting, connecting and celebrating wāhine - we’d love to kōrero with them (or you!).
Drop us an email at [email protected] and let’s kōrero.
For everyone else.. Te Kāinga Wāhine Hononga 2024 is coming your way soon..
