Spotlight: Empowering Voices Through Culture

Ko Hinekoia Tomlinson tēnei. Meet Hinekoia, the founder and driving force behind Waiata Mai Vocal Coaching.

Hailing from Ngā Puhi, Ngāti Awa, and Whakatōhea, Hinekoia’s journey is a beautiful testament to the power of reconnecting with whakapapa and reo through her pakihi.

Waiata Mai Vocal Coaching stands at the intersection of skill-building and cultural connection. It is a place where aspiring singers unlock their full potential, gaining the confidence to take the stage with pride and passion. Hinekoia, with her unwavering dedication, is the guiding light on this transformative journey, empowering her students to shine on any stage they choose.

For Hinekoia, waiata Māori were the gateway into Te Ao Māori. These songs opened the door to Te Reo Māori and became the bridge connecting her to her whakapapa and enabling her to express her Māoritanga. They are not just songs; they are a powerful vessel for cultural identity.

Tōku reo tōku ohooho, māpihi maurea whakakai marihi.

One of Hinekoia's specialties lies in working alongside kaihaka (performers) and kaiako (teachers) to develop efficient vocal techniques. Performing a 25-minute kapa haka routine is a vocal marathon, and Hinekoia knows the science behind it. She helps individuals understand the intricacies of vocal function, teaching them how to become more vocally efficient while creating the desired sound for kapa haka.

As part of our six-month business development program, Waiata Mai Vocal Coaching underwent a brand makeover and introduced a brand-new Professional Development offer for Kaiako working with Kapa Haka groups.

Hinekoia's story is a shining example of the magic that happens when you combine the power of connection, cultural heritage, and unwavering dedication.
